Anyone having new windows fitted today can be assured that they will be highly energy efficient. The days of single-glazed windows in rattly frames are long gone; modern double glazing performs very well, thermally speaking, and unless it’s been fitted poorly it should perform at a high level for many years.

Yet there is always a first among equals, and in this article we will explore some examples from the range of windows we sell to see which might have priority when it comes to choosing on the basis of energy efficiency.

Before we delve into the particulars, let’s first look at window materials. We supply two types, uPVC and aluminium. Both are excellent performers in their own ways, but in terms of thermal efficiency, aluminium has the edge. Our aluminium windows feature Thermlock® technology and a 1.5 W/(m²K) U-value with double glazing for enhanced insulation. Aluminium frames also have an ultra-modern aesthetic and slim sightlines that are especially good for patio and bifold doors.

On the other hand, uPVC has excellent thermal efficiency, plus a range of styles and design options that will suit a wider range of properties than aluminium. All the uPVC windows we supply are designed to prevent heat loss and enhance thermal efficiency in your home with their efficient window frames, and are A-rated as standard.

Now let’s turn to a selection of our best-selling double-glazing options to check out energy efficiency as we find the best choice for your home and lifestyle.

Casement Windows

The uPVC casement window is probably the most popular style of window in the UK today. Based on a traditional design, our casement windows can have a side-hung opening or top-hung opening, with a choice of styling options. Because they sit flush to the frame, when casement windows are closed, they provide an excellent weathertight seal. The sash presses against the frame, reducing air infiltration. They also open outward like a door, allowing precise control over ventilation.

Sash windows

If you’ve ever lived in a house with original wooden sliding sash windows, you may recall how they often rattled in the wind. Not anymore. Modern uPVC sash windows of the type we sell are capable of achieving U-values as low as 1.3 and they are A-rated as standard, making them a worthwhile investment for your home.

Tilt and turn windows

As the name suggests, uPVC tilt and turn windows can either swing open like casement windows or tilt inward from the top. This flexible design allows excellent ventilation throughout your home. Like casement windows, tilt and turn windows provide a secure seal when closed. The tilt and turn windows we supply are ‘A’ rated for energy efficiency as standard, and they have excellent insulating properties to help keep your home warm and save you money on your energy bills.

Aluminium windows

In recent times, aluminium windows (and doors) have become extremely popular, particularly among householders with contemporary or architect-designed properties. Our modern aluminium windows, made by Sheerline, a company with an outstanding reputation for top quality and innovative products, are a great example of this. These windows have excellent thermal efficiency, slim sightlines, strength and durability, making them one of the most energy efficient window styles on the market. For anyone who wishes to combine stunning aesthetics with high-level performance, modern aluminium windows are an excellent option.

Double glazing v triple glazing

All the windows we supply are double glazed, so you can be assured of outstanding thermal performance and flexibility of choice. We also offer the option of triple glazing units, which have a third layer of glass and an additional cavity, helping to reduce your energy bills even further. Triple glazing units are also particularly suitable for properties close to sources of constant noise, for example motorways, busy A roads and directly under flightpaths.
